About RTR

About RTR

RTR (Aero) is a mandatory certification for commercial pilots conducted by WPC India. It evaluates both theoretical knowledge and practical communication skills required for safe and efficient air-ground communication.

This course focuses on ICAO standard phraseology, aeronautical communication procedures, and real-time application in Indian airspace. You will learn how to communicate clearly, accurately, and confidently with ATC under normal and high-pressure situations.

Special emphasis is placed on practical training, including real-time communication scenarios and role-play exercises, as the viva voce component is the most critical part of the RTR exam.

By the end of this course, you will develop strong communication proficiency, ensuring success in both the written and oral examination.

FAQ’s

What is RTR (Aero) and why is it important?

RTR (Aero) is a mandatory certification for all commercial pilots, conducted by the Wireless Planning & Coordination (WPC) Wing in India. It certifies your ability to communicate effectively using aviation radio telephony, which is essential for safe flight operations.

What is the structure of the RTR exam?

The RTR exam has two parts: • Written Exam – Objective questions on communication rules and procedures • Oral/Viva – Real-time ATC–pilot communication and scenario-based interaction The viva is considered the most critical part of the exam.

Is RTR difficult to clear?

RTR is considered challenging, especially the viva, because it tests real-time communication under pressure. However, with proper practice, structured preparation, and confidence, it can be cleared in one attempt.

Does this course prepare for both written and viva?

Yes, the course is designed to cover both components. It includes theory for the written exam and extensive practical training for the viva, including role-play and real-time scenarios.

Will I learn ICAO phraseology properly?

Absolutely. The course provides complete training on ICAO standard phraseology, pronunciation, and communication structure, which are essential for both exams and real flying.

Is practical communication practice included?

Yes. Practical training is a key part of the course. You will practice ATC communication, readbacks, and real-life scenarios to build confidence and fluency.

How important is pronunciation in RTR?

Pronunciation is extremely important. Incorrect pronunciation can lead to confusion and loss of marks in the viva. The course focuses on clear and correct ICAO-standard pronunciation.

Will this course help me reduce nervousness during viva?

Yes. Through repeated practice, mock sessions, and structured guidance, the course helps you build confidence and handle pressure during the oral exam.

Do I need prior knowledge of communication before starting?

No prior knowledge is required. The course starts from the basics and gradually builds up to advanced communication and real-time application.

How many attempts are usually required to clear RTR?

Many students require multiple attempts due to lack of practice. This course is designed to help you clear RTR in one attempt by focusing on both theory and practical communication skills.

Will I get mock viva practice?

Yes, mock viva sessions and scenario-based practice are included to simulate real exam conditions and improve your performance.

What kind of questions are asked in RTR viva?

The viva includes real-time ATC communication, standard phraseology, emergency situations (MAYDAY/PAN-PAN), and situational responses. This course prepares you specifically for these scenarios.
